Google Identifies Misconceptions in the SEO Industry

Google’s Matt Cutts posted another video yesterday answering some questions from the public.

The question that was asked, “Hi, Matt. Which aspect of Google updates you think the SEO industry simply won’t get? Where do you see many SEOs spending too much energy on when they could be taking care of other things?”

Matt agreed that these are great questions and and addressed them as follows:

  1. SEOs seem to confuse algorithm updates with a refresh of data.
  2. The recent Panda & Penguin algorithm updates are not about making Google more money in the short term.
  3. SEOs should spend more time on enhancing the user experience instead of time and energy focused on link building.

Number 3 seems to hit home with us as most of our clients’ competition is always focused on link building. Measurable tactics seems to prevail while Google constantly preaches to not worry about specific tactics and focus on a strategy that is centered around the users of your site. Spend more time promoting your site on social media and other areas to help build awareness.
